The game also boasts a vast number of new and returning playable characters, as the highly anticipated officers Yue Jin and Li Dian from the Wei Kingdom, who make their first appearance in the series, alongside more than 70 playable characters that fight to prevail in the battlefield.

The game retains the EX weapon system, though all characters now have unique EX weapon types, instead of sharing it with each other. Examples include Sun Jian featuring a new nine-ringed blade. This is a dao that has a total of nine rings that connect to the sword's back. The rings are able to produce sound that inflicts damage upon enemies.The game retains the weapon-switching feature. All weapons from Dynasty Warriors 7 and its expansions return, with many new ones added. Weapon Proficiency makes a return, though the weapon seals is not, instead replaced by "Weapon Tempering" system.

The system resembles the weapon fusion used in the Warriors Orochi series, in which players can combine two weapons to create a stronger one or trade three weapons to receive two stronger ones. Players can keep multiple copies of a single weapon type which may have different stats and elements on them. A weapon's type now includes an affinity, being one of the following three elements: 天 Heaven, 地 Earth, 人 Man. With these three affinity elements, a triangular relationship connecting the three in an infinite manner determines which affinity will outdo one another. This triangular relationship is similar to Rock-paper-scissors. The relationship states that the "Heaven" affinity is effective against the "Man" affinity, the "Man" affinity is effective against the "Earth" affinity, and the "Earth" affinity is effective against the "Heaven" affinity. There are seven different types of enemies, called “Vectoids.” These enemies are of various colors and, as their name suggests, they are vector shapes. The entire game actually has a unique art style that fits quite nicely with this genre of games.

In addition to seven different types of enemies, there are 11 different types of towers in four categories: green, red, purple and blue. Each of these tower types can attack any type of Vectoid, but some towers fair better than others against a certain-colored Vectoid, and some fair worse. For example, the red towers do 150% damage to red “Shredder” Vectoids, but they only do 50% damage to green “flyer” Vectoids. Each tower color has three increasingly deadly (and expensive) towers, except the blue towers which only have two different variations. These towers can be upgraded once placed, up to level 10. If all of this sounds complex, the game does a very good job of using screen real estate and you can easily figure out what tower is going to be needed for an upcoming wave of enemies.

What adds a bit more to the strategy aspect of this game is that you can set each tower’s attack mode. For example, placing towers near the exit of the level set to target the weakest enemy (the one with the least amount of health left) will reduce the number of lives you lose should the wave of enemies break through your towers closer to the entrance. While you earn money for every destroyed enemy, occasionally a yellow bonus ring comes into play. Destroy that and you earn a bonus point. These can be spent on one of two upgrade towers, which don’t attack enemies but boost either the damage or range of nearby towers. You can also spend your bonus points to raise your interest rate, which increases the amount of money you receive for each enemy destroyed, or on an extra five lives.

The amount of units you can control also increases so you can field larger and better armies. The tactical side of the game has changed little from the previous, except in that only the main objective missions have any kind of pre-determined elements. The terrain is generated depending on where on the map you encounter the enemy forces and it does quite a good job as well at presenting a realistic battlefield. If you’ve played one tactical strategy game, you’ve played them all and so there are no surprises here – but Northern Crusades still does things quite well. Unit management is way more in depth than in other games, with 80 factors governing morale alone, so there’s a lot to think about.

You've got the career mode, which offers up what seems like a huge number of stages (game stages, not rally stages) and takes you through a rally driver's entire career; championship mode, which puts you into a single rally championship, taking place over multiple rallies and stages; time trial for competing against the clock; and single rally events for when you don't feel like playing through the career mode or a championship.

The career mode is clearly where you're intended to spend most of your time, and the developers have put a lot into it, with many stages to your development as a rally driver. Eventually you'll unlock and drive the 4WD, Super 2WD, RWD, 4x4, Classic, Special cars and Group B classes. There is one big problem preventing you from doing this though: the game is damn hard. After many hours play I'm still struggling near the beginning of the career mode, and have drifted over to the other game modes to get my rallying fix.

A few years back a title was released on the PC named Chaos League. This was just a tiny bit reminiscent of Games Workshop's specialist table-top board game, Blood Bowl. The team rosters were remarkably similar; the player stats reflected the same qualities despite an obvious name change; the experience system and player skills were incredibly familiar; and although the gameplay in Chaos League was based on a real-time strategy simulation, rather than a turn-based mechanic, you were effectively playing Blood Bowl in all but name. Ace for Blood Bowl fans, not so much for Games Workshop's wallet! Cyanide Studio's were subsequently taken to Chinatown for breach of GWs intellectual property.

Ideally, the PSP version of Blood Bowl only features the turn-based method of play - the real-time strategy chugs enough on a PC so was obviously deemed as unsuitable for the handheld format. This is no bad thing, as it means you're playing Blood Bowl the way it's meant to be played. And at first all seems well. The four introduction videos (a different one plays on each load of the game) are gorgeous, even on a PSP, and really fire you up for the carnage about to follow. The tutorial and the inclusion of an in-depth rule encyclopaedia ensure the controls and the complexity of the Blood Bowl client used are fairly intuitive to understand. The turn-based mechanics, therefore, work effectively and are easy to pick up. This includes the playing field being split into individual squares, much like the board-game, so one can visualize and calculate how far a player can move or throw the ball. Finally, the in-game graphics of the playing field and the three-dimensional modelling of the players are neat and tidy, with the ability to view the action from a range of views and perspectives. Although some of the character designs look a little garish and pixelated close up, they're functional, which is all they really need to be. File Size 77 MB!
